Auburn University's 1856 – Culinary Residence

Plan a summer evening to remember with a visit to one fine dining establishment making a name for itself on The Plains and beyond. Auburn University’s 1856 – Culinary Residence is a roof-to-table experience like no other.

About 1856 – Culinary Residence

Recently named Alabama’s “Best New Restaurant In Every Southern State 2024” by Southern Living, Auburn University’s 1856 – Culinary Residence is, in fact, a teaching restaurant as part of the university’s Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center.

As such students work under chefs-in-residence, currently Ford Fry, and a chef de cuisine, Thomas Baco-Wang. to create a refined ambiance for an à la carte lunch menu and a tasting menu for dinner. However, according to 1856’s Facebook page, guests have a short time left to enjoy one of Chef Ford Fry’s dishes.

What’s more, the menu changes every two weeks. That means even if you have dined while the current chef has been in residence, chances are, you didn’t have what’s on the menu now.

About the menu

While the menu changes frequently, the current lunch menu boasts dishes such as shrimp remoulade for starters, chicken schnitzel as a main entrée and satsuma tart as dessert to name a few.

If you decide to make a dinner reservation, the tasting menu might offer unique flavors featuring delicacies like tortellini with pork belly, balsamic and blackberry compote and ending the meal with petit fours.

Location

Auburn University’s 1856 – Culinary Residence is located on campus at 205 S. College St. So, the elegant establishment is about two miles from Summer Wind Apartment Homes, which means you can arrive after about a seven-minute drive.
